Brian Conwell Drowning: Syracuse IN Man, 55, Dies in Tragic Lake Wawasee Incident
SYRACUSE, Ind. — The Syracuse community is mourning the reported death of Brian Conwell, 55, following a tragic drowning at Lake Wawasee on Friday. His unexpected passing has left family members, friends and community supporters grieving.
According to information released after the incident, Kosciusko County Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 2 p.m. after Conwell was reported missing near the lake’s sandbar. Witnesses reportedly said he had entered the water while working on a mooring task involving anchoring equipment.
Conwell reportedly began experiencing difficulty in the water shortly afterward, prompting an immediate emergency response. Multiple agencies rushed to Lake Wawasee as rescuers launched an extensive search operation.
Indiana Conservation Officers, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Syracuse EMS and other emergency personnel participated in the response. Dive teams were also involved as authorities searched the lake for Conwell.
Emergency crews eventually located Conwell and brought him out of the water. Life-saving efforts, including CPR, were immediately performed as responders attempted to revive him. Despite the extensive rescue operation and continued medical treatment, Conwell could not be saved.
The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office pronounced him deceased. Indiana Conservation Officers preliminarily classified the incident as an accidental drowning. An autopsy has been scheduled as authorities continue working to establish the official cause of death.
Conwell’s passing has also affected members of the Marion community, where he was remembered as an enthusiastic supporter of downtown Marion and SOS Marion. Following the tragedy, SOS Marion expressed condolences to his family and remembered the impact he had on people around him.
For those who knew him personally, Brian was more than the circumstances surrounding his final moments. He was a husband, father, friend and community member whose relationships reached across multiple communities.
