Jamaal Howard Executed in Texas for 2000 Murder of Convenience Store Clerk
Jamaal Howard, a 46-year-old Texas death-row inmate convicted of killing convenience store clerk Vickie Swartout during a 2000 robbery, was executed by lethal injection Wednesday evening, October 7, 2026.
Howard was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. at the Huntsville Unit of the Texas prison system after receiving a lethal dose of pentobarbital. His execution was the first carried out in the United States since a failed lethal-injection attempt involving Tennessee death-row inmate Christa Pike the previous week.
The execution proceeded after Howard’s final legal appeals were rejected. Earlier Wednesday, his attorneys had asked courts to halt the execution, raising concerns about the state’s use of pentobarbital and arguing that Howard was intellectually disabled. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals rejected the requests, and the U.S. Supreme Court also declined to intervene.
Howard was convicted of capital murder for the May 2000 killing of Swartout, 42, at a convenience store in Silsbee, a small community in southeastern Texas. Prosecutors said Howard, who was 20 at the time, robbed the store and shot Swartout once in the chest. Surveillance footage from the business was among the evidence used against him at trial. According to court records, he took $114 and a carton of cigarettes during the robbery.
Before his execution, Howard was given an opportunity to make a final statement. Members of Swartout’s family were present to witness the execution from a nearby viewing area. Howard apologized to the victim’s relatives and asked for their forgiveness, while also expressing love for his own family and friends.
According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Howard remained talkative during the approximately 45-mile trip from the death-row facility to the Huntsville Unit. He reportedly made small talk with officers and continued asking questions before being taken to a holding cell near the execution chamber.
Howard’s execution also drew attention because of the circumstances surrounding the recent failed execution attempt in Tennessee. Pike survived an attempt to administer two doses of pentobarbital and was subsequently hospitalized. Howard’s attorneys argued that the developments raised questions about the reliability and safety of lethal-injection drugs, but courts rejected their requests for a stay.
Howard became the 30th person executed in the United States in 2026 and the seventh person put to death in Texas this year, according to reports. Texas has additional executions scheduled before the end of the year.
The execution brings to an end more than two decades of legal proceedings stemming from Swartout’s killing. Howard’s final statement focused on remorse and forgiveness as he faced the sentence imposed for the 2000 robbery and murder.
Jamaal Howard was 46 years old.
