The Rockhampton, Queensland, community is mourning the passing of Wendy Mulry, a much-loved former WIN Weather presenter, travel business owner, and longtime member of the Rockhampton Jockey Club (RJC). Her death has left family, friends, colleagues, and members of the racing community deeply saddened.
Wendy was a treasured figure within the Rockhampton racing industry, having dedicated more than a decade of service to the Rockhampton Jockey Club. She was first elected to the committee in 2013 and became known as a respected voice, bringing wisdom, honesty, and a steady presence through the many challenges and successes experienced by the club over the years.
RJC officials and racing participants have paid tribute to Wendy’s remarkable contribution, remembering her as someone whose impact extended far beyond committee meetings. Her business knowledge, passion for racing, and ability to connect with people made her a valued member of the Callaghan Park community.
Deputy chairman Bill Ouston shared heartfelt words about Wendy’s years of service, describing her as a consistent voice of reason who left a lasting legacy at Callaghan Park and throughout Rockhampton. He also recalled the many entertaining stories and memorable moments that reflected Wendy’s vibrant personality, sense of humour, and zest for life.
Wendy was admired not only for her professionalism but also for her warmth and character. Friends often remembered her as someone who brought laughter and positivity wherever she went. Her personality, generosity, and ability to make people feel welcome made her a truly special part of the community.
She was also a beloved wife to Bob Mulry and a proud member of a family deeply connected to racing. Her husband Bob and son Liam, a well-known race caller, have long been familiar faces within the racing industry. The family’s connection to Callaghan Park has been strengthened through generations, including the annual Chas Jones Memorial Trophy held during the Rockhampton Cup Carnival in honour of Wendy’s father.
Following news of her passing, the Rockhampton Jockey Club has announced tributes to honour Wendy’s memory. Her table will be set one final time in the members’ lounge at Callaghan Park, while jockeys will wear black armbands during a race meeting as a mark of respect and gratitude for her years of dedication.
A celebration of Wendy’s life will be held at Callaghan Park on 14 August, allowing family, friends, and members of the racing community to come together to honour her extraordinary life and legacy.
