Jukes died on August 6, 2026, while on holiday with his family in Portugal, according to reports from leading wine publications. He was 58. The circumstances surrounding his death were described as sudden, but a specific cause of death has not been publicly reported.

Throughout his career, Jukes became particularly well known for promoting Australian wine to international audiences. His annual “100 Best Australian Wines” list became an important part of his work, highlighting producers and wines to consumers in the United Kingdom and beyond.

He was also the author of 14 wine books, including The Wine List, and his publications sold more than one million copies. In 2012, his contribution to Australian wine was recognized when he was named an Honorary Australian of the Year.

Jukes’ connection with South Australia extended beyond wine writing. He founded the Touch Wine charity event in 2005, helping raise funds for the Hutt Street Centre and Adelaide’s homeless community. Friends and colleagues remembered him as passionate, generous, curious and deeply committed to the people and places he championed.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia, and four children.
