Accident 376 Today: Road Worker Killed in Deadly Sacramento Hit-and-Run

A devastating overnight crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento has left a construction worker dead and renewed concerns about the dangers faced by road crews working along busy California highways.

The fatal accident happened at about 12:39 a.m. Monday, August 10, on eastbound Highway 50 near the Stockton Boulevard overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol. A construction crew was working in a lane and shoulder that had been closed and marked with cones when a Honda sedan entered the restricted area.

Authorities said the Honda struck a construction vehicle being used to protect the workers before hitting a worker, who was knocked from the elevated highway onto Stockton Boulevard below. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, described by authorities as a woman in her 20s, allegedly left the scene after the initial collision. She later struck another vehicle on Highway 50 and was apprehended shortly afterward. No injuries were reported in that second crash. CHP said alcohol is suspected to have played a role.

The victim’s identity and additional personal details have not been publicly confirmed in the reports reviewed.

The crash serves as a painful reminder of the risks construction workers face while protecting and maintaining the roads used by thousands of motorists each day. As investigators continue examining the circumstances, the Sacramento community mourns a worker whose life was tragically cut short while doing his job.
