Lonnie Xaymongkhune Obituary: 69-Year-Old Amarillo Man Killed in Tragic Fritch Highway Crash
The Amarillo, Texas, community is mourning the tragic loss of Lonnie Xaymongkhune, 69, who died Thursday afternoon following an unusual and devastating traffic crash on Fritch Highway, also known as State Highway 136.
According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:08 p.m. on August 13, 2026, to the 3000 block of Fritch Highway following reports of a major traffic collision.
When officers arrived, they discovered a Toyota Tundra in a field west of the highway. Xaymongkhune was found deceased in the driver’s seat.
The preliminary investigation has revealed a particularly tragic sequence of events. Police said the Toyota was traveling southbound on Fritch Highway when a large piece of concrete reportedly fell from a passing semi-truck.
The concrete struck Xaymongkhune’s vehicle and entered through the windshield. According to investigators, the piece of concrete struck him in the head, causing fatal injuries.
After the impact, the Toyota left the roadway and traveled into a nearby field, where authorities ultimately found the vehicle.
Xaymongkhune’s wife was also inside the pickup at the time of the crash. She was reportedly traveling as a passenger and was not seriously injured in the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the crash have prompted an active investigation because the semi-truck believed to have dropped the concrete has not yet been located.
Investigators are now working to identify the truck and determine exactly how the concrete became detached and entered the roadway. Authorities may review witness accounts, roadway evidence, surveillance footage and other available information as they attempt to reconstruct the incident.
For Xaymongkhune’s family, the circumstances surrounding his death make an already painful loss even more difficult to process. A routine journey suddenly turned into a fatal emergency, leaving loved ones to cope with the unexpected death of a 69-year-old husband, family member and friend.
The fact that another person was present in the vehicle but survived adds another difficult dimension to the tragedy. Xaymongkhune’s wife is now facing the loss of her husband while also recovering from the shock of witnessing the devastating crash.
Fatal roadway incidents can have effects that extend well beyond the immediate family. Friends, neighbors and members of the Amarillo community may also struggle to understand how such an unusual accident could occur.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that could help identify the semi-truck to contact the Amarillo Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit or Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 806-374-4400.
Investigators have not yet publicly identified the semi-truck or its driver. Until that vehicle is located, important questions surrounding the crash remain unanswered.
The investigation will likely focus on the condition of the semi, the source of the concrete, how it became dislodged and whether the truck driver was aware that material had fallen from the vehicle.
For now, authorities have released only the preliminary circumstances of the crash, and additional information may emerge as detectives continue their work.
Xaymongkhune’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of how unexpected hazards on roadways can have devastating consequences. While drivers can take precautions, incidents involving falling debris can happen with little warning.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on identifying the truck involved and providing answers to Xaymongkhune’s loved ones.
The Amarillo community is left to mourn a man whose life ended suddenly on a local highway. His family and friends will now remember him through the years, relationships and experiences they shared with him.
Further updates are expected as investigators work to locate the semi-truck and determine the complete circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
