David W. Flood Obituary: Carleton, Michigan Man Dies After Lawn Mower Incident in Ash Township

CARLETON, Michigan — The Carleton community is mourning the reported death of David W. Flood, 73, following a tragic traffic-related incident in Ash Township on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

David’s passing has brought sadness to his family, friends, neighbors, and others who knew him throughout his life. At 73, he leaves behind years of memories and relationships that will continue to be remembered by those who loved and cared for him.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, deputies and emergency responders were called to W. Labo Road, east of Woodslee Drive, at approximately 6:19 p.m. following a report of an incident involving a lawn mower.

Preliminary information released by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office indicates that David was operating an orange-and-black Scag Freedom Z 48-inch zero-turn lawn mower while traveling eastbound along the grass shoulder of W. Labo Road.

The shoulder reportedly had a steep decline leading toward a ditch. While traveling along the area, David lost control of the mower for reasons that remain under investigation. The machine overturned and came to rest at the bottom of the ditch, trapping David underneath.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and worked to assist him. Despite their efforts, David sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities reported that alcohol was not considered a factor in the incident. The circumstances surrounding the loss of control remain under investigation, and additional information may be released as the investigation continues.

The Ash Township Volunteer Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit, and Chaplain Program were among those who assisted at the scene.

For David’s family and friends, however, the incident represents much more than an official investigation. His death marks the loss of a person whose life was shared with family, friends, neighbors, and members of his community.

Those who knew David are left to remember him for the relationships he built, the experiences he shared, and the memories created throughout his 73 years.

As the investigation continues, the Carleton community joins David’s loved ones in mourning his unexpected passing and remembering the life he lived beyond the circumstances of his death.
