Shooting On Highway 50 – Deadly Shooting on Highway 50 in Sacramento County Follows Police Pursuit
A deadly shooting involving law enforcement shut down westbound Highway 50 in Sacramento County early Tuesday morning after a police pursuit ended near Hazel Avenue, authorities said.
The incident began shortly before midnight Monday when California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a Volvo on Folsom Boulevard after observing the vehicle traveling without its headlights on. The driver initially stopped but then fled, prompting a pursuit through the Rancho Cordova and Fair Oaks areas.
The chase continued onto westbound Highway 50, where officers attempted to stop the vehicle using spike strips. At least one of those attempts was successful, according to authorities.
The pursuit ended near Hazel Avenue shortly after midnight when the driver pulled onto the shoulder and got out of the vehicle. Authorities said the driver then produced what appeared to be a firearm, prompting officers to open fire.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol, Citrus Heights Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the confrontation. The driver, who was the only person inside the vehicle, was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
The shooting created a major crime scene on the freeway, forcing the closure of westbound Highway 50 between Hazel Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard during the morning commute. Thousands of motorists faced significant delays while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence.
The freeway was reopened later Tuesday morning, shortly after 9 a.m., following the completion of the initial investigation at the scene.
Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased driver, and investigators have not released the number of shots fired or determined which officers fired their weapons. The circumstances leading to the confrontation remain under investigation.
The incident was one of several serious law-enforcement emergencies reported in the Sacramento area Tuesday, adding to widespread traffic disruptions across the region. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the fatal shooting.
