Mireya Navarro Obituary, New York, NY Death: Journalist and Editor Dies After Cancer Battle
The community of New York, New York is mourning the death of Mireya Navarro, a respected journalist and editor who passed away after a long battle with cancer. A fellow Puerto Rican, Navarro was remembered by CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez as a trailblazer whose pioneering career helped open doors for Latino journalists who followed.
Navarro spent 28 years at The New York Times, beginning in the early 1990s. Her reporting included coverage of the AIDS epidemic, the Caribbean and Central America before she expanded into other beats. Her work established her as an influential journalist whose career reflected both journalistic excellence and a commitment to issues affecting communities across the region.
Following her time at the Times, Navarro joined the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law, where she served as editor-in-chief of its Spanish-language website. She also shared her experience with the next generation of journalists as an adjunct at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, where she created and taught a course on environmental reporting.
Navarro is survived by her husband, Jim Sterngold, a former CUNY Senior Advisor to the Chancellor. She is also being mourned by colleagues, students, friends and loved ones who remembered her contributions to journalism and education.
