Mason Jeffrey Neal Obituary: Punxsutawney Man and Former Marine Dies at 23
The Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, community is mourning the loss of Mason Jeffrey Neal, who passed away on September 17, 2026, at the age of 23. His death has left family members, friends, fellow Marines, and others who knew him remembering a young man whose life was marked by military service, adventure, friendship, and strong connections with those around him.
Born on May 5, 2003, Mason was the son of Jeffrey Scott Neal and Beth Meehan Neal. He was a brother, both by blood and by choice, to Adison John Neal, Andrew Scott Neal, Ben David McConnaughey, and Alex Brian Gaffney. He is also survived by his grandfather, Terry Neal Sr., as well as many friends who considered him an important part of their lives.
Mason was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Sharon Neal; maternal grandparents John and Nancy Meehan; and chosen brother Sean McConnaughey.
A 2021 graduate of Punxsutawney Area School District, Mason had already developed a strong determination to pursue military service. During his high school graduation, students planning to enter the military were asked to stand. Mason arrived just in time and proudly took his place in his muddy Muck Boots, a moment that reflected his determination to follow through on his plans.
In October 2021, Mason enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed basic training at Parris Island and graduated on January 6, 2022. He was later stationed in Okinawa, Japan, before being honorably discharged as a Corporal in spring 2025.
After returning home, Mason worked at Eagle Railcar Services and completed the training required to obtain his commercial driver’s license. Most recently, he worked with Parking Lot Painting (PLP) in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
Outside his professional life, Mason enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, fireworks, and spending time with friends. He especially valued creating lasting memories with the people closest to him. His cats, Big Show and Meatball, also held a special place in his life.
His obituary reflects the way he approached life, noting that although he did not have many years, “he sure had a lot of life in those years.”
In lieu of flowers, Mason’s family has requested memorial contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McCabe Funeral Home, Inc. in Punxsutawney.
Mason J. Neal will be remembered for his military service, love of family and friends, adventurous spirit, and the meaningful memories he created during his 23 years. His loved ones will carry those memories forward as they mourn a life that, although brief, touched many people.
