Dr. Idris Evans Dies After Fatal Edgewood Stabbing; UPMC Children’s Doctor Was 46
Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, has died after being stabbed during an overnight incident at a home in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, September 24, 2026. His death has left colleagues, patients, families and members of the medical community mourning a physician whose career was devoted to caring for critically ill children.
According to Allegheny County police, emergency dispatchers received a report of a stabbing at approximately 12:31 a.m. in the 100 block of Linden Avenue. Responding officers and first responders found Dr. Evans and an adult woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. Both victims were transported to area hospitals in critical condition, but Evans later died from his injuries. The woman remained hospitalized in critical condition, according to reports.
Authorities have since identified 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway as the suspect. Police said investigators determined through witness interviews that Hemingway allegedly entered the home and attacked the victims while they were sleeping. A Monroeville Police Department K9 unit later located Hemingway behind a nearby home, where he reportedly had cuts on his hand. He was taken to a hospital for treatment before being taken into custody.
Hemingway faces multiple charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
Dr. Evans was a respected member of the UPMC Children’s Hospital and University of Pittsburgh medical communities. UPMC identifies him as the medical director of its Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He was board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine.
His professional interests included pediatric sepsis, critical care transport and electronic health record analysis. Through his clinical, academic and research work, Evans contributed to the care of seriously ill children and to efforts aimed at improving specialized pediatric critical care.
UPMC expressed deep sadness over his death, describing Evans as a dedicated caregiver and valued member of its hospital and university communities. The health system extended its condolences to his family, loved ones and colleagues while asking that their privacy be respected.
