Ryan Scanlon Gurnee IL Obituary, Death: Gurnee Baseball Standout Died
Ryan J. Scanlon, 24, of Gurnee, Illinois, passed away on September 25, 2026. He will be remembered by his family, girlfriend, teammates, friends, and community for his love of family, faith, sports, and the people around him.
Ryan’s baseball journey began at Warren Township High School and continued at Carthage College, where he distinguished himself as a pitcher. In 2025, he was named CCIW Conference Pitcher of the Year. He also earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major and recently completed a master’s degree in Sports Management. He had begun his professional career and recently finished his first year with Champro.
Sports remained a central part of Ryan’s life. He enjoyed playing and watching them, and his connection to the sporting community began early with years spent working as a caddy at Merit Club. He made lasting friendships there.
One story captured Ryan’s commitment to his teammates: During a two-week study-abroad trip to Spain, he returned early to pitch in his final college game. He took the mound and threw a shutout, bringing his collegiate baseball career to a memorable close.
Ryan was a devoted older brother to Ashley, whom he cared for deeply. He met his longtime girlfriend, Hannah Poff, during his first week of college. Their relationship grew into a close partnership, and they were making plans for their future together.
Those who knew Ryan remember his warmth, humor, and lively presence. His faith was also an important source of strength and encouragement in his life.
Ryan is survived by his parents, Suzanne and Matt; his sister, Ashley; his longtime girlfriend, Hannah Poff; his grandmother, Doreen Scanlon; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Mary Ann and Richard Starkey, and John Scanlon.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 2, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee. A funeral Mass will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 3, at the church, followed by interment at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville.
McMurrough Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Ryan’s accomplishments on the baseball field and in the classroom were significant, but those closest to him will remember his devotion as a son, brother, partner, teammate, and friend. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will live on through the people and connections he leaves behind.
