South Melbourne Tram Stabbing Update, Melbourne: Woman Stabbed in Neck in Random Attack as Man Arrested

A 51-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck while travelling on a Route 1 tram through South Melbourne on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in what police believe was a random attack. The incident occurred around midday on Eastern Road near Kings Way, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Police said a 37-year-old man of no fixed address allegedly lunged at the woman with a kitchen knife while the tram was moving. The tram stopped shortly afterward, and the man allegedly fled before being pursued and arrested by police nearby. Authorities said they are not looking for any other offenders and do not currently believe the victim and alleged attacker knew each other.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to The Alfred Hospital. Her injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as police surrounded the tram and emergency crews rushed to assist the victim, who had been travelling with her dog.
