Jamarius Joshua Woods Dies in Shelby Shooting; Kobe Flack Charged With First-Degree Murder
SHELBY, N.C. — The Shelby community is mourning the death of 19-year-old Jamarius Joshua Woods, who was fatally shot Friday night, September 18, 2026. A second 19-year-old Shelby man, identified by police as Kobe Flack, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
According to the Shelby Police Department, officers responded at approximately 8:09 p.m. to the 2100 block of Green Oak Drive after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Woods lying in a driveway with a single gunshot wound. Officers, along with Cleveland County EMS and Shelby Fire & Rescue personnel, immediately began lifesaving efforts.
Despite the emergency response and attempts to save his life, Woods succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said officers soon encountered an individual matching the description of the suspected shooter approximately one-half mile from the location of the shooting. The person was taken into custody without incident.
As investigators continued working to determine what led to the deadly shooting, the Shelby Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Team identified the person in custody as 19-year-old Kobe Flack, also of Shelby.
Flack was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Woods’ death. The charge represents an allegation, and the case will proceed through the criminal justice system.
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about the circumstances that preceded the shooting or disclosed a possible motive. Investigators are continuing to work to establish what happened before the fatal gunshot and what led to the confrontation.
Police said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public related to the case.
The death of Woods has left family, friends and members of the Shelby community facing a sudden loss. At 19, his life was cut short in circumstances that remain under investigation.
