Billy Ray Smith Jr. built a life that reached far beyond the football field, remembered for his fierce competitiveness, leadership, humor, and devotion to the people around him. His death at 64 has left the football community and San Diego sports world mourning a beloved figure.

Smith died on July 29, 2026, his family confirmed, following a long battle with dementia caused by chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. His family said he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and raised in Plano, Texas, Smith followed his father, Billy Ray Smith Sr., into football. He starred at Plano Senior High School before attending the University of Arkansas, where he became a two-time All-American. His achievements eventually earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

The San Diego Chargers selected Smith fifth overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. He spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the franchise, recording 26.5 sacks, 15 interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries, and 13 forced fumbles. He was later named to the Chargers’ 50th anniversary team.

After football, Smith became a familiar voice in San Diego sports broadcasting, working in television and radio.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Hunt, and daughter, Savannah.

Billy Ray Smith Jr.’s legacy lives on through the game he loved, the fans he inspired, and the family and friends who knew the man beyond the uniform.
