According to investigators, 24-year-old Michael Gates allegedly opened fire on the responding officers, striking Officer Matthews. Other officers returned fire and were able to remove him from the scene quickly to get medical help.

Matthews was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Police officials stated that he is expected to make a full recovery, crediting his protective vest with preventing more serious harm.

During the incident, a woman inside the home was also found with a gunshot wound to her leg. She was conscious and transported for treatment as well.

Authorities confirmed that Gates was taken into custody and is expected to face multiple charges related to the shooting. Officials also noted that officers had previously responded to the same residence for mental health-related calls, highlighting the ongoing challenges surrounding such situations.
