Matt Dee Bondi Rescue Suicide, Perth, AUS Death, What Happened To Former Bondi Rescue star?

Matt Dee, the former lifeguard and beloved cast member of Australian television series Bondi Rescue, has died, prompting an outpouring of grief from friends, colleagues and members of the community who knew him.

The tragic news was announced Wednesday morning by FTW Revolution on Instagram, alongside a photograph of Dee laughing with his head thrown back while holding a beer. The clothing brand, which is connected with Suicide Prevention Australia and had Dee as an ambassador, described his death as heartbreaking.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our Matt Dee,” the statement said.

“Matt touched the lives of many, he also did amazing work and he will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.”

Dee became widely known through Bondi Rescue, appearing on the popular Australian reality series from 2008 through 2017. As a lifeguard at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, he was part of a team whose demanding work and close bonds became familiar to television audiences in Australia and around the world.

Beyond his television career, Dee became a passionate advocate for mental health, drawing on deeply personal experiences to encourage greater understanding and compassion for people living with mental illness.

Dee lost both his brother, Jonathon, and his sister, Rachel, within a year after they experienced severe mental health illness. He was two years younger than Jonathon and three years older than Rachel. The three siblings were raised by their single mother in Melbourne and shared childhood memories that included holidays in Torquay, where they learned to surf.

In a 2011 interview with The Sun-Herald, Dee spoke candidly about the deaths of his siblings and the painful questions surrounding mental illness.

“What happened was not their fault,” he said.

“They did their best to manage their illnesses. It wasn’t their fault. They had a problem inside their heads. It’s something we don’t understand. How would we know what it’s like?”

Dee also spoke openly about the guilt he carried following their deaths, acknowledging that he sometimes felt he could have done more. His willingness to discuss grief, guilt and mental health helped make his advocacy deeply personal and gave him a platform to speak to others facing similar struggles.

The cause of Dee’s death has not been confirmed. FTW Revolution said funeral arrangements and further details would be announced once they had been finalized.

The organization also urged anyone experiencing difficult emotions following Dee’s death to seek support and reminded people that they do not have to face those feelings alone.

Messages of remembrance have continued to appear as those who knew Dee reflect on his life, his work and the impact he had on others.

For many viewers, Dee will be remembered as one of the recognizable faces of Bondi Rescue. For those who knew him beyond television, his legacy also includes his efforts to speak openly about mental health and to help challenge the stigma surrounding mental illness.

As arrangements are awaited, friends, colleagues and supporters are mourning a man remembered for his laughter, service, advocacy and commitment to helping others. His memory is expected to live on through the people he touched and the conversations about mental health that he worked to advance.
