Panera Shooting – Woman Fatally Shot Near Panera Bread in Sacramento as Highway 50 Standoff Unfolds
A woman was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon near a Panera Bread restaurant on Howe Avenue in Sacramento, triggering a major law enforcement investigation and a separate police standoff on nearby Highway 50.
Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 800 block of Howe Avenue at approximately 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. When deputies arrived, they found a woman who was unresponsive in a parking lot. Firefighters and emergency personnel attempted to assist, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly began examining the area around Howe and Northrup avenues, including the area near the Panera Bread restaurant. Witnesses and surveillance information helped investigators identify a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting.
The investigation then led authorities to eastbound Highway 50 near Howe Avenue, where law enforcement officers located and surrounded a stopped vehicle. Officers closed portions of the freeway while they conducted a standoff, with police vehicles and tactical personnel surrounding the suspect vehicle.
The situation ended when officers approached the vehicle and removed a person. That individual was found dead, according to authorities. Investigators were examining whether the person was connected to the fatal shooting near Panera Bread.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the Highway 50 incident was believed to be possibly related to the Howe Avenue shooting. Authorities were continuing to investigate the exact circumstances, including the relationship between the deceased woman and the person found dead on the freeway.
The shooting and subsequent freeway standoff caused significant traffic disruptions throughout the Sacramento area. Highway 50 was temporarily closed as investigators processed the scene and collected evidence.
Authorities have not released the identities of the people involved, and the investigation remains active. Officials are expected to provide additional information as detectives work to establish what led to the shooting and what happened afterward on Highway 50.
