Matt Suhey Obituary, ALS Death, Deerfield, IL Community Mourns Passing

Matthew Jerome Suhey, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, accomplished businessman and former Chicago Bears player, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026. He was a man remembered for his remarkable character, generosity, integrity and, above all, the deep love he showed to his family and friends.

Known to football fans as Chicago Bear #26, Matt Suhey built a lasting legacy both on and off the field. Born and raised in State College, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of seven children. His passion and talent for football led him to Penn State University, where he played collegiately before embarking on a storied ten-year career with the Chicago Bears.

During his decade in the National Football League, Suhey became part of Bears history and a Super Bowl champion. His accomplishments on the football field made him well known throughout Chicago and beyond, but his relationship with the city extended far beyond his athletic career. Matt fell in love with Chicago, its people and its communities, ultimately making the city home for himself and his family.

Following his football career, Matt established an equally impressive reputation in the business world. As an entrepreneur, he was known for his integrity, strong work ethic and determination. Those who knew him recognized that the qualities that contributed to his success as an athlete—discipline, perseverance and commitment—also shaped his professional life.

Yet, despite his many accomplishments, Matt considered his family his greatest source of pride. He leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Donna, and their three children, Joey and his wife, Gianna; Allison and her husband, Matt; and Scotty. He was also a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren: Quinn, Matthew (MJ), Tess, Teddy, Cameron, Casey and Charlie.

His grandchildren lovingly called him “Higgies,” a special nickname honoring his mother’s maiden name, Higgins. The name reflected the affection and closeness that defined his relationship with the youngest members of his family.

Beyond statistics, championships and professional accomplishments, Matt will be remembered for the people whose lives he touched. He was generous with his time, loyal to his friends and deeply committed to those he loved. His family described him as a man whose extraordinary legacy will continue through the people he cherished and the values he embodied.

Matt’s passing leaves a profound absence for his family, friends and the many people who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will endure through his wife, children, grandchildren, friendships and the lasting mark he made in both football and business.
