Claudia Tacoronte Death: 21-Year-Old Spanish Exchange Student Killed in Cuautla, Mexico

The community of Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, is mourning the death of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a 21-year-old Spanish exchange student who was fatally attacked on September 12, 2026, at the Casa de la Cultura in Cuautla. Tacoronte was studying in Mexico as part of an academic exchange between the University of Granada in Spain and the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). Mexican authorities are investigating her death under the protocol for feminicide.

Tacoronte was originally from the Canary Islands and was studying her fourth year of Early Childhood Education at the University of Granada. She arrived in Mexico in August and began her academic exchange at UAEM, where she was expected to remain through the end of the year. Reports indicate that she had been in Cuautla to attend a traditional medicinal plant festival when the fatal attack occurred.

According to reports citing witnesses and security sources, Tacoronte was attacked with a bladed weapon after an apparent robbery. She reportedly sought refuge inside the Casa de la Cultura, where she was seriously wounded. Emergency personnel later confirmed that she had died at the scene. The alleged attacker fled, and authorities have continued investigating the circumstances and possible motive.

News of her death has prompted grief in both Mexico and Spain. The University of Granada publicly condemned the killing and expressed condolences to Tacoronte’s family, classmates and friends. The university also held a moment of silence in her memory. UAEM likewise expressed its condolences and called for an immediate and thorough investigation with a gender perspective.

Spanish authorities have also responded to the tragedy. Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares called for justice and urged that the circumstances surrounding Tacoronte’s death be fully investigated. Spanish diplomatic officials have remained in contact with the family and Mexican authorities.

Claudia Tacoronte’s death has left her family, university communities and friends mourning a young woman whose academic exchange in Mexico was cut tragically short. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to establish the full circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.
