Nathaniel D. Carter Death: McKee, Kentucky Man Killed in Clay County Barn Fire

The McKee, Kentucky, community is mourning the death of Nathaniel D. Carter, 40, whose passing is being investigated as a suspected murder following a barn fire in Clay County. His death has left family members, friends and others who knew him facing an unexpected and painful loss.

According to Kentucky State Police, authorities were called to a reported barn fire on KY-577 in Clay County at approximately 8:30 p.m. on September 17, 2026. Clay County 911 requested assistance after the fire was reported. When first responders arrived, they discovered an unidentified male in the fire debris.

Investigators reported that the man appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Kentucky State Police detectives were subsequently called to the scene as authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. An autopsy was conducted the following morning.

On September 18, investigators identified the victim as Nathaniel D. Carter, 40, of McKee, Kentucky. Authorities have said foul play is suspected, and the circumstances surrounding Carter’s death remain under investigation.

During the investigation, authorities located and interviewed Dalton S. Bowling, 28, of Manchester, Kentucky. Bowling was subsequently arrested and charged with murder in connection with Carter’s death. The charge represents an allegation, and the ongoing investigation is expected to establish additional details about what happened before the fire and the circumstances surrounding Carter’s death.

Detective Logan Gay is leading the investigation, with assistance from Kentucky State Police personnel, the Clay County Coroner’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Burning Springs Fire Department and Forgertown Fire Department.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly disclosed all details surrounding the suspected killing. As the case develops, additional information may emerge regarding the events that led to the barn fire and Carter’s death.
