Yancy Lambert New York, 66yrs Old, Obituary, ETS Band Grieves as Talented Drummer Passed Away
The music community is mourning the loss of Yancy Drew Lambert, a talented drummer whose rhythmic gifts helped shape the sound of the early ’80s band Eye of the Storm (ETS).
Yancy’s journey into drumming was somewhat unexpected. Originally the band’s percussionist, he stepped behind the drum kit when former drummer Scott Meneades departed, taking on the role almost by accident. According to a close friend and former bandmate, Yancy had no real ambition to become a drummer — yet he took to it naturally, quickly becoming what was described as “the heartbeat of the band.” He was just 18 or 19 years old at the time.
The band recorded at Euphoria Sound Studios in Revere, Massachusetts, capturing tracks like the original song “The Burbs” on a Tascam 80-8, engineered by Gordon Hookailo. Remarkably, that recording came together when Yancy had only been playing drums for a short time, yet his groove and feel were already unmistakable — a sign of the talent that would define his musical identity.
As the ETS years came to a close, Yancy took his talents to New York City, while his bandmate and friend relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his own path. Though their careers took them in different directions, the two remained mutual admirers of each other’s work and were fortunate to reconnect and stay in touch in more recent years.
Yancy Drew Lambert leaves behind a legacy woven into the rhythm of a formative era in music, and a friendship that endured across decades and distance. He will be deeply missed.
